Hey there David. Just a couple quick responses to your questions. Send me an email ([masked]) and I can send you an invite to Google+ so you can check it out.
Secondly, the main point behind it that makes it different than the other social networks (all the big ones anyway) is that it requires you to choose each time as to what groups of people you want to send it to.
This customization is important to marketers and allows better content to be received by you.
